Dr Yan Jia issued the approval on July 22, 2022. As a retrospective study, the requirement for informed consent was waived. All personal identifiers were removed from the dataset before analysis, and access to raw data was strictly limited to authorized researchers. Confidentiality of participant information was maintained in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and relevant data protection regulations throughout the research process.

In their seminal work published in Nature Medicine, Yang et al [4] introduced the concept of a “Digital Mask” (DM) designed to protect patient privacy while preserving disease-relevant features critical for diagnosis. While this innovation represents a significant step forward in privacy preservation, Meeus et al [5] subsequently raised concerns about the reidentification risks associated with the DM.
