Bone health will be assessed by a DXA scan, a vertebral fracture assessment, and blood levels of bone turnover markers (BTMs) for osteoclast and osteoblast activity (beta-carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks [β-CTX] and N-terminal procollagen type 1 [P1 NP]). For logistic reasons, it is not possible to get fasting blood samples for every woman. Since β-CTX values are only valid in fasting blood samples, we will assess this BTM only in those women for whom we have fasting blood samples.
