COVID-19 Diagnosis and Risk of Death Among Adults With Cancer in Indiana: Retrospective Cohort Study

COVID-19 Diagnosis and Risk of Death Among Adults With Cancer in Indiana: Retrospective Cohort Study

Early studies from China [10-12] reported a 2- to 4-fold increase in mortality due to COVID-19 among patients with cancer compared to those without cancer, while a few smaller studies reported a case-fatality rate of 29% [13] and poorer outcomes [3] among patients with cancer who have COVID-19. Some studies from Europe and the United States have investigated mortality among cancer subpopulations and demonstrated a 34% [14] increase among individuals with solid tumors compared to hematologic tumors.

Impact of a Personal Health Record Intervention Upon Surveillance Among Colorectal Cancer Survivors: Feasibility Study

Impact of a Personal Health Record Intervention Upon Surveillance Among Colorectal Cancer Survivors: Feasibility Study

A 30-minute training session was developed to introduce patients to the content and functionality of the CRCS-PHR and was conducted in person by the research assistant at the time of recruitment. In addition, virtual training tools were embedded in the CRCS-PHR, including a 5-minute narrated training video and a detailed help section describing the purpose of all links, data-entry forms, and features of the tool.

Uses of Personal Health Records for Communication Among Colorectal Cancer Survivors, Caregivers, and Providers: Interview and Observational Study in a Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory

Uses of Personal Health Records for Communication Among Colorectal Cancer Survivors, Caregivers, and Providers: Interview and Observational Study in a Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory

One patient said, “It would be nice to be able to keep up with how your treatment’s going, kind of knowing if you’re…getting better…A lot of times when you have cancer you always have a question mark over your head – where am I?” One provider discussed how the PHR could stimulate patients to ask questions. A caregiver noted that information from the PHR could be printed and brought to doctor appointments to address key issues.

Predicting COVID-19–Related Health Care Resource Utilization Across a Statewide Patient Population: Model Development Study

Predicting COVID-19–Related Health Care Resource Utilization Across a Statewide Patient Population: Model Development Study

The first 6 weeks of receiving a diagnosis of COVID-19 (ie, 6-week cohort). A metric of which patients would need inpatient care during the course of their illness [19].

Leadership Perspectives on Implementing Health Information Exchange: Qualitative Study in a Tertiary Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Leadership Perspectives on Implementing Health Information Exchange: Qualitative Study in a Tertiary Veterans Affairs Medical Center

One HIM (operations) leader recalled that opting in was a multistep process that was unexpectedly time intensive. One full-time clerk was hired to process consent documents, which on a peak day could exceed 60 documents. Several operations leaders also described a successful strategy wherein veterans recruited other veterans; specifically, one lead employee in the ROI office was himself or herself a veteran.

Usefulness and Usability of a Personal Health Record and Survivorship Care Plan for Colorectal Cancer Survivors: Survey Study

Usefulness and Usability of a Personal Health Record and Survivorship Care Plan for Colorectal Cancer Survivors: Survey Study

Jacobs and colleagues sought to understand the usability of a health management aid and found that effective use was associated with the development of a tool that was customizable, mobile, and integrated into the care of patients [18]. In the case of a clinical trial matching system embedded in a Web-based PHR, Atkinson and colleagues found that changing content and attending to usability issues improved breast cancer patients’ satisfaction with the technology [17].

The Use of Cancer-Specific Patient-Centered Technologies Among Underserved Populations in the United States: Systematic Review

The Use of Cancer-Specific Patient-Centered Technologies Among Underserved Populations in the United States: Systematic Review

Targeting a Hispanic population for CRC screening, Fernandez et al [63] used an RCT to compare (1) a tailored interactive multimedia intervention, (2) a lay health worker delivered media print intervention, and (3) a no intervention control group. No statistically significant differences were found among the study arms.

Toward Timely Data for Cancer Research: Assessment and Reengineering of the Cancer Reporting Process

Toward Timely Data for Cancer Research: Assessment and Reengineering of the Cancer Reporting Process

To better understand the complex processes involved in cancer case reporting, we conducted a multi-phase study. First, we interviewed cancer registrars to identify barriers to timely reporting and developed a model of current reporting processes. Second, we developed computer simulation models to represent the current state and a potential, redesigned future state.

Personal Health Record Reach in the Veterans Health Administration: A Cross-Sectional Analysis

Personal Health Record Reach in the Veterans Health Administration: A Cross-Sectional Analysis

We compared the relative reach of MHV using a set of 18 health conditions of high prevalence and/or importance among veterans. We then further explored how patient demographics, comorbidities, and facility characteristics may be affecting MHV reach. We conducted a cross-sectional assessment of PHR adoption and use across clinical conditions. Use was assessed as of April 1, 2012.
