Measuring Environmental and Behavioral Drivers of Chronic Diseases Using Smartphone-Based Digital Phenotyping: Intensive Longitudinal Observational mHealth Substudy Embedded in 2 Prospective Cohorts of Adults

A recent study by Straczkiewicz et al [52] found similar discrepancies in walking outcomes by comparing step counts obtained from smartphone-based accelerometers and Fitbit devices, which is consistent with our findings. It is important to point out that, if we extrapolate the total number of steps to the 24-hour period (average of 996 steps over 400,000 participant days at 8 hours per day), we estimate that we would obtain approximately 3000 steps per day.
