Results of t tests (2-tailed) and χ2 tests showed no significant differences in the demographics and outcomes between the chatbot and control groups and between those who received and did not receive notifications. Table 1 summarizes the demographic characteristics of the participants.

This will be accomplished using chi-square tests for categorical variables and t tests or nonparametric Wilcoxon rank-sum tests for continuous variables. Given the relatively small sample size in this pilot study, we will flag potential bias in missing data based in part on the descriptive statistics from these tests, rather than relying only on their significance levels, and use this preliminary information to help inform the interpretation of our results.

Before the main analyses, independent samples t tests (2-tailed, paired) will be conducted on the baseline demographic variables to identify any significant differences between the 2 groups. Any variables that show statistically significant differences will be included as covariates in the subsequent main analyses. It is expected that the treatment group will demonstrate improved emotion regulation and reduced mood symptoms and loneliness following the music intervention, compared with the control group.
